When Bad Things Happen

Deut. 29:29 "The secret things belong to God."

On the ten year anniversary of 9/11, we reflect back to that day. Sometimes we ask why bad things happen and ask where was God to allow it to happen. The answer is the same place He was when His Son was nailed on the cross.
We had something tragic happen in our community recently. Grandparents were strolling their one year old grandson and a limb fell from a tree striking the baby and killing it. So hard to understand. I am sure so many cried out to God, why?
We won't know the reasons until Heaven. But something I am convicted of about myself  is my response to times like these. I will say, "Maybe God is...."  Who I am to try to give reasons for God's actions.  Isn't this what Job's friends did? God's response in Job 38:1-2  "Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge."
The primary reason we are sometimes at a loss for words is
that we should be at a loss for words. We are in over our heads and silence is our best option. Remind yourself what you do know about God. His ways-slow to anger, compassionate, & can do no wrong.  We live by promises not be explanations (W. Wiersbe)
I want to always remind myself of Romans 8:28 and of His promise of "all things work together for the good of those who know the Lord and are called according to His purpose." and of Ecc. 5:1-2 "let my words be few."
I do get comfort in the news that I heard this week regarding the baby that died. The grandfather was saved. He will see his grandson again one day. But you know, when I get to Heaven I wonder if I will be so busy praising my Father that these former thoughts will fade away.

(Most of the comments and statements above were copied from my notes of what wiser people than me have said. I wish I had made of notes of who they were.)

  1. Beautiful post Brenda, filled with Godly Wisdom and Truths. No matter what happens in this life, we need to hold on tightly to The Lord, and Trust Him in the good times and those times when we just don't understand the why's.

  5. Brenda, I love your header!! Should be on my blog, lol. You know "wildflowers"! I also love the black and white photo with the words of your post and remembrance. The grandparents walking their baby grandchild, as a grandmother my heart breaks for them. Senseless to us. I believe when the grandparents meet the Lord they will understand. Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving such a delightful comment. Please feel welcome to back and visit again.
    Blessings,
    Lynn

  7. There are some things that will remain a secret this side of glory. I appreciated the scripture you included that give such good perspective for times of tragedy like you described. What would we do without that perspective?

  8. There are so many things we do not and cannot understand. God's ways are not our ways but He definitely knows what is best and someday we will understand. The picture you shared is really great.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte
