A Family Bible

These verses and comments are from my Grandmother's Bible.
In this picture she is holding me with my mom and her mom beside her. I was thinking she looked rather old in the picture, then I realized she was younger than I am now. So say she was in her early 50's here, I have to wonder what she would have said or done different if she had know she would live 50 plus more years. Because she did. So she was only half way through with her life here.
This was one of her later in life Bibles. How many Bibles did she wear out in her 100 plus years? It has comments and is underlined throughout. It was her guidebook to live by. It told her of her hope and future.
If I live to be 100, how many Bibles will I wear out? How will my Bible show those left behind what was important to me on earth?
I want to leave several worn out Bibles during my life.

  1. Brenda - such a wonderful legacy she left you. I recall attending a funeral a few years back and the decendent's family spoke of her well-worn Bible, marked with notes, favorite scriptures highlighted, etc. The funeral was truly a celebration of her life and her love for Christ. That left a powerful impact on me and made me think, "what would people say about me, if they looked at my Bible?"

    Many blessings,
    Joan

  2. Brenda,
This brings tears to me eyes. To see the writing, read the words, and then to see that wonderful picture of all of y'all! Such a blessing to start my Saturday. I'll share this with Lane, Sandy, and Liz; I know they'll love it too.
    Love,
    Lisa

  4. Thanks Joan and Sarah.
Lisa aren't you glad we are connected through a Godly woman. Dad told something funny the other day. Said Mama had a serious surgery late in life (in her 90's I think) and they were concerned about if her mind might be confused. Uncle Jim (your Granddad) said I know how to tell and said, "Mama where was our lesson from last Sunday?" She told him chapter and verse."
You see, I know we were in Romans last Sunday but I couldn't tell you the chapter.

  5. Yes! I am very glad we're connected through such a godly woman.

What a great story. :-) I'm glad I can still hear all their voices in my mind.

  6. A precious heritage. I love going through old Bibles. I don't want to be the one who doesn't make it to heaven. "Will the circle be unbroken." I'm a third generation Christian, my children the fourth and grandchildren the fifth. My greatest desire is that we all meet around the throne of God.

  7. Your gandmother had a heart after the Lord, her Bible truely meant everything to her. What a legacy she gave to her family. You are very blessed to have such a wonderful example to follow. Blessings from Oz, Crystal Mary

  8. Brenda, I enjoyed reading the notes in her Bible and seeing the pictures. I have my Dad's Bible and it is precious to me, but most of all, I remember how he lived a Christlike life.

  9. Thank you for sharing this encouraging post. I'm amazed when I look at pictures of my grandmother and others of that generation. They look sooo much older than people of that age today. What a nice picture of the four generations. My mother wrote a lot of notes in her Bible too. I'm so glad I have that Bible now. The notes in your grandmother's Bible sound like notes from the Church of Christ.
    Have a great week.

  10. What a treasured keepsake. The notes in your grandma's Bible reminded me of this quote, "When you read God's Word, you must constantly be saying to yourself, "It is talking to me, and about me." --Soren Kierkegaard
